Hi Maia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My childhood nights were soothed by the scent of lavender. Experiencing its benefits firsthand were the breadcrumbs that led me to create Illusion Elixirs.
Years later, I was approached to sell essential oils, but multi-level marketing never felt right. With a background in industrial engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, I was determined to craft my own products using these powerful concentrates. It was time to take matters into my own hands, so I began sourcing essential oils online.
Coding at a bank, I often felt like a cog in a machine. My creations kept me sane, and my hobbies became a sanctuary. I poured all of my free time and energy into creating essential oil blends.
By then, I had delved deep into my personal spellwork practice. Adding intention into everything using crystals, herbs, colors and chants, brought profound changes, and I wanted to share this magic with my friends and family.
I began to bring these essential oil potions, infused with intention, to festivals and gatherings, and people were captivated!
A friend introduced me to mining and the beautiful art form of copper electroformed jewelry and I fell in love. This led to the creation of hand-sculpted mushroom and quartz pendants, along with many other one of a kind pieces of jewelry.
Two years into the journey, with immense support and a leap of faith, I left my job to pursue the business full-time.
My name, Maia, translates to ‘illusion’ in Sanskrit. I named my business, Illusion Elixirs to remind people that healing comes from within. Even when physical tools provide powerful support and a reminder of your goals, it is your own power, your own will and your own mind that allows the magic to really happen!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Building the business was unbelievably difficult, and there were so many times I wanted to throw in the towel. Without my amazing partner, Steve Justice, I don’t think I would have made it. He pushed and supported me the entire way, even using his skills as a tattoo artist to design the logo that I still use to this day.
After laying out my goods on a blanket and years of setting up a table at campgrounds, participating in a real vending event felt like a huge step up.
Two vending events later, the pandemic hit, changing all of our lives in such drastic ways and forcing me to take a hard look at my life. I decided to get sober and pivoted to online sales. Handwritten notes and extra little gifts resonated with Illusion Elixirs’ loyal customers.
I vended as much as I could post-pandemic, although the Pittsburgh climate limited full-time possibilities. Steve and I had always dreamed of warmer climates.
We began to plan our move when devastation struck. In March 2022, our house went up in flames with us inside. We lost everything.
It was the perfect time to start over from scratch in beautiful Florida. On a whim, we chose sunny St. Petersburg, without ever visiting the area. The support from friends, family, and strangers made it all possible.
Rebuilding was an opportunity to enhance the business, from website creation to redesigning packaging. I still send out every single order with a handwritten note!
The dream of vending regularly materialized, and everyone in the Tampa Bay area has embraced me with open arms! I love talking to artists, art lovers, locals, and people just passing by.
Now, Illusion Elixirs’ perfume potions and jewelry are in three stores in the St. Petersburg area! I am unbelievably thankful for all of the support over the years, and I hope to be in more stores in the future, maybe even have a shop of my own one day!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Some of my fondest childhood memories take place by the lake in Maine. The crisp, clean air; swimming and kayaking; watching shooting stars; and enjoying lobster and blueberry pie with family—these experiences will forever hold a place in my heart.
Inspired by these serene moments, I created Calm, an essential oil blend that encapsulates the essence of Maine. I source the balsam fir essential oil directly from the state because the beautiful pines represent tranquility to me.
